Bachelor of Science in Computational Mathematics

The requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Computational Mathematics consist of three parts: the University Requirements for all students at Michigan State University, the requirements of the College of Natural Science, and the requirements of the Department of Mathematics.

I. University Requirements

  1. American Thought and Language: WRA (ATL) 1XX. This course is a prerequisite for IAH 201.
  2. Integrative Studies in Arts and Humanities: One IAH course numbered 201 through 210, and a second IAH course numbered IAH 211A or higher.
  3. Integrative Studies in the Social Sciences: ISS 2XX and ISS 3XX.

II. Requirements of the College of Natural Science

  1. One of the following biological science courses: PLB 105, BS 110, BS 111, ENT 205, MMG 201, PSL 250, or ZOL 141.
  2. A year of chemistry with a lab: CEM 141,142,161 (or its equivalent).
  3. A year of calculus-based physics: PHY 183,184 (or its equivalent).
  4. A minimum of thirty credits in courses numbered 300 or higher, including courses in other colleges.
  5. 2-credits of laboratory experience: In addition to the 1-credit CEM 161 listed in part IIB one can get a). an additional 1-credit lab from among CEM 162, PHY 251, PHY 191, PLB 106, MMG 206, BS 110 (includes a 1-credit lab), or GLG 201 (includes a 1-credit lab); or b). an additional 2-credit lab from BS 111L.

III. Requirements of the Department of Mathematics

  1. For students declaring the major SS02 or later, first-year competency in a foreign language,
    with the following exception: students admitted to the Teacher Certification Program may waive this
    first-year foreign language competency upon completion of the Professional Education sequence
    TE150, TE250, TE302, TE407, and TE408 for secondary certification. (TE150; TE250; TE301, TE401 and TE402 for elementary certification.)
  2. Calculus and differential equations: MTH 132, MTH 133, MTH 234, and MTH 235 or MTH 340 (or the honors equivalent).
  3. Mathematics core: MTH 309, MTH 310, MTH 320, MTH 451, and MTH 481.
  4. Computer Science core: CSE 231 and CSE 232.
  5. Sequence course: MTH 452 or MTH 482.
  6. Capstone course: MTH 496.
  7. At least one of the following courses: CSE 331, CSE 440, MTH 415, MTH 416, MTH 441, MTH 452, MTH 472, MTH 482, STT 351, STT 441, STT 461, STT 430, MTH 360, MTH-STT 455, or MTH 457.

    Note:
    1. You may not use MTH 452 or MTH 482 for both E and G.
    2. STT 430 and either MTH 330 or MTH 432 are required for students in the teacher certification program.

Total Credits: 120 (minimum) with a minimum GPA in mathematics courses of 2.0 and a minimum overall GPA of 2.0.
