Complete registration info here. Short version:

Readings are listed in the Syllabus. Read the section to be discussed before class, and again before doing the homework. See the course page for supplementary handouts.

GRADES:  Based on:

Tests 1,2,3,4   4 × 100
Final Exam200
Total600points

You will also have several ways to earn extra credit:

Tentative grade scale:   ≥90% = 4.0;   ≥85% = 3.5;   ≥80% = 3.0;   ≥75% = 2.5;   ≥70% = 2.0;   ≥65% = 1.5;   ≥60% = 1.0;   <60% = 0.0.

TESTS 1−4:  One-hour tests given in class, with no calculators allowed. Arrive five minutes early for extra time. No makeup tests will be given unless you contact me before the test, and produce a documented excuse.

Expect these tests to be difficult. You will need the opportunities for extra credit!

FINAL EXAM: Common to all sections of Math 132. Scheduled for Mon Dec 8, 2003, with the room to be announced late in the term.

QUIZZES:  There will be a 10-minute quiz at the beginning of class every Friday (except on Test days), with questions drawn from the homework and the lectures. No calculators. Each quiz grade will count as 5pts extra credit toward your 600pt point score.

GATEWAY EXAMS:  I. Basic algebra. II. Differentiation. These two exams practice your algebraic manipulation skills (which will be vital for the Tests and the Final). You can take each Gateway as many times as you like until you pass (as long as they are offered), which will add 20 extra points to your course total. A score of 7 out of 8 is required to pass, which is about the level of algebra accuracy you will need for the other course work.

You should take Gateway I as soon as it is available on Sept 3, and you must pass it by Sept 26. Gateway II is available Sept 29 to Oct 24. Times and rooms.

DAILY HOMEWORK:  The HW listed on the Syllabus is crucial for your learning. Listening to the lectures is not enough: you must practice to really learn. Test questions will be drawn largely from the daily homework. You can hand in complete solutions to the HW each week on Fri for an extra 5pts toward your 600pt score.

I will give the same HW credit (5pts per week's assignment) for doing the assignment online in MyMathLab. If you choose this option, please do not hand in paper assignments. Also, not all of the Syllabus problems are available online, so you should still work out the the rest of the assignment for your own learning.
