TEXT:  M. Artin, Algebra. I will supplement the text with handouts, particularly for the first part of the course.

GRADES:  Based on:

Weekly Quizzes20%
Midterm Exams2 × 20%
Final Exam40%

I will also assign extra credit homework problems and/or projects.

EXAMS: There will be two Midterm Exams, the first covering Part I of thecourse, and the second covering Part IIA,B,C (Artin Ch 2, 3, 4). The Final Exam is scheduled for Mon Dec X, 2004, XX:XXam--XX:XXam, but I might make other arrangments to be announced.

WEEKLY QUIZZES:  There will be a 20-minute quiz at the beginning of class every Friday, with questions drawn from the homework and lectures. This will either be a traditional written quiz, or an oral quiz in which I call on students to solve homework problems or closely related problems. If I am not satisfied with your answer, you can regain some of the credit by handing in a complete written solution the following Monday.

DAILY HOMEWORK:  I will not collect the daily homework listed on the course page, but it is crucial for you to do all the assigned problems, especially the more difficult ones. This is where you will learn the most, and test and quiz questions will be drawn largely from the homework.

GENERAL ADVICE:  This is an Honors class, and I will expect a level of effort and ability well above the average at MSU. You should think of this class as halfway between an undergraduate and a graduate level.
