The Seventeenth ICMI Study: Technology Revisited

Update on the 17th ICMI Study
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY
We are now requesting sponsorship for this conference. Your support would be invaluable in helping to enable broad participation from those in less affluent regions of the world. Given the topic of ICMI study 17, support from companies like yours committed to the development of technology in Mathematics teaching is particularly welcome.

Companies supporting the conference will have the opportunity to run workshops for the participants. A special 2 hour time slot will be allocated to these "sponsored workshop" with no other activities for the participants. Companies will also be able to run workshops during working groups, especially for Vietnamese teachers and students who will not participate in these activities and at other convenient time slots. We are asking for a level of sponsorship of $1000 for these workshops. Your company can also be a "full sponsor" of the conference and have its logo on all the material of the conference (CD of proceedings distributed to participants, web site, conference programme, booklet, etc.) for an additional $2000.

We would be very pleased if your company could consider either level of sponsorship. Please contact Celia Hoyles or Jean-baptiste Lagrange

Announcing the 17th ICMI Study "Digital technologies and mathematics teaching and learning: Rethinking the terrain".

Announcing the ICMI study conference 3-8 December 2006. Call for contributions.

Download the english version of the Discussion Document including detailed call for contributions.

The 17th ICMI Study will be concerned with the use of digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning in countries across the world. In particular it will focus on:

  • 1. cultural diversity and how this diversity impinges on the use of digital technologies in mathematics teaching and learning particularly in developing countries.
  • 2. a set of themes to serve as the organising framework: Mathematics and mathematical practices; Learning and assessing mathematics with and through digital technologies; Teachers and teaching; Design of learning environments and curricula; Implementation of curricula and classroom practice; Access, equity and socio-cultural issues; Connectivity and virtual networks for learning.

Participants in the Study will be invited through their written submission to propose to which theme they would contribute taking account of the following approaches: Impact on mathematics; Roles of different digital technologies; Contribution to learning mathematics; Role of the teacher; Theoretical frameworks.

The Study Conference will be hosted by the Hanoi Institute of Technology. As is the normal practice for ICMI studies, participation in the Study conference will be by invitation only, given on the basis of a submitted contribution.

The Study Book that will follow from ICMI Study 17 will be published in the ICMI Study Series. The volume will be informed by the papers and the discussions at the Study Conference as well as its outcomes. A report on the Study and its outcomes will also be presented at the 11th International Congress on Mathematical Education to be held in Mexico in 2008.

Call for Contributions to ICMI Study 17.
Submissions will be between 6 pages and 8 pages and written in English, the language of the conference. They will be submitted electronically here.

Date of submission: no later than January 15, 2006.

Proposals will be reviewed and decisions about invitation to the Conference will be sent by the middle of May, 2006.
