Visualizing Gradients on the Stanford Dish

Math 51 ACE, Winter 2005

On March 3rd, 2005, our ACE section met in the Stanford Hills instead of our usual classroom. It was a fun "feet-on" activity: we went along the trail through the hills, computed several gradient vectors and directional derivatives using a topographic map, and then compared the computations to what we could actually see.
